Malaya Akulukjuk Biography

MALAYA AKULUKJUK (MALAIYA; MALIA; KILAPIK)
Born: March, 1915 Female E6-240
Place of Birth: Kirkitant
Resides: Pangnirtung
Drawings, Prints, Tapestries, Sculpture
Throughout her life Malaya Akulukjuk has kept herself busy making arts and
crafts. She first learned to carve in 1962 and made items such as seals,
whales and people from stone, antler and whalebone. However, due to poor
eyesight she no longer is able to continue working in this medium. Poor
eyesight has also prevented Malaya from continuing her sewing. Until recently
she made parkas and vests using a variety of materials such as duffel, stroud,
felt, skins, and furs. However, Malaya is better known for her drawings which
are often used as designs on tapestries and prints. She continues to draw
using various mediums such as pencil, coloured pencil and felt pen. Her
favourite subjects are animals and birds.
