Lot 131: Sophie Anderson LITTLE BO PEEP monogrammed lower

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Sophie Anderson LITTLE BO PEEP monogrammed lower right SA, signed on reverse Sophie Anderson oil on canvas, 29.5cm x 25cm (11.5" x 9.75") Sophie Anderson née Gengembre was born in Paris, the daughter of an eminent French architect and his English wife. In the mid 19th Century, the family moved to the United States and Sophie became a successful portrait painter. She met and married her husband Walter Anderson and in 1854 they moved to England, setting up home in Hackney. There is no information as to whether they had children, but the child in this picture bears a striking resemblance to the child (thought to be their daughter) in Sophie Anderson's paintings "No Walk Today", "Tying the Shoelace", "Windfall" and "Ladybird Ladybird"

Description: The Tambourine Girl signed 'S.Anderson' (lower right) oil on canvas 13 x 12 in. (35 x 30.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 27 June 1978, lot 71. NOTES Sophie Anderson was the daughter of the French architect Charles Gengembre and his English wife. She was brought up in Paris and initially studied under Baron Charles de Steuben but in the wake of the Revolution of 1848 the family emigrated to America, living first in Cincinatti, then in Pittsburgh, where she established a reputation as a painter of portraits. Following her marriage to the landscape painter Walter Anderson in 1854 she moved to England, exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1855. From 1878 onwards she also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery. During the 1870s and 1880s, the couple lived for long periods on Capri, and it is probable that the present picture dates from their stay on that island.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: BE SEEN AS CHARACTERISTIC OF SOPHIE ANDERSON'S WORK IN THE LATE 1850S AND EARLY 1860S ON THE BASIS OF COMPARISON WITH THE PAINTING OF HERS WHICH IS BEST KNOWN TO A MODERN AUDIENCE, NO WALK TODAY (COLLECTION OF THE LATE SIR DAVID SCOTT; EXHIBITED SUNSHINE AND SHADOW, NATIONAL GALLERY OF SCOTLAND, EDINBURGH, 1991, NUMBER 10) OF 1856. IT MAY WELL BE THAT SAME CHILD (IN ALL LIKELIHOOD THE DAUGHTER OF THE ARTIST) SERVED AS THE MODEL ON BOTH OCCASIONS; IN EACH PAINTING SHE SEEMS TO BE ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE YEARS OLD. BOTH WORKS SHOW THE CHILD SITTER WEARING RICH AND ELABORATE CLOTHES, IN WHICH SHE MAY BE RECOGNIZED AS THE DAUGHTER OF RELATIVELY WEALTHY PARENTS. FURTHERMORE, THE FURNISHINGS AND FABRICS OF THE INTERIOR IN WHICH SHE SITS IN THE PRESENT PAINTING SUGGEST THE TASTE OF THE RISING MIDDLE CLASSES OF THE MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY. IN A TECHNICAL SENSE ALSO THE PAINTING CAN BE SEEN AS A WORK FROM THE PERIOD WHEN THE ARTIST FIRST SETTLED IN LONDON. AS IN NO WALK TODAY SOPHIE ANDERSON HAS HERE USED PURE BLACK AND DARK COLOURS IN THE BACKGROUND TO EMPHASIZE THE LIT FEATURES OF THE GIRL, WHEREAS IN LATER YEARS SHE TENDED TO DEPEND ON A PALER OVERALL COMPLEXION OF COLOUR. EQUALLY, THE LACE HANDKERCHIEF IS MICROSCOPICALLY DETAILED IN ALL ITS ELEMENTS, AND TO A DEGREE WHICH THE ARTIST DID NOT ATTEMPT IN HER LATER CAREER.

Description: Gathering beechnuts signed 'S. Anderson' (lower right) and inscribed 'Bramley/Surrey' (on an old label attached to the stretcher) oil on canvas 163/4 x 21 in. (43.5 x 53.4 cm.) NOTES Sophie Anderson was born in Paris, the daughter of the French architect Charles Gengembre and his English wife. She studied under Baron Charles de Steuben before her family emigrated to America at the outbreak of the 1848 revolution. They lived initially in Cincinatti and then in Pittsburgh and she established herself as a successful portrait painter. In 1854 she married the English landscape artist Walter Anderson and they moved to England where she became a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1855. From 1878 she also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery. Owing to Sophie's ill-health the couple spent long periods in Capri from 1871 where they continued to paint and send works back to England for exhibition. The last years of her life were spent in Falmouth in Cornwall. The present work can be compared to Touch and Go, to Laugh or No (Sir David Scott Collection) in which two tousled and eminently natural farmers' children play in a sweep of unspoilt and undeveloped heath and bracken. In their subject-matter and light fresh technique both pictures contrast markedly with Anderson's most famous work No Walk Today (Sir David Scott Collection) in which a finely dressed little girl stares despondently out of the window at the rain that is preventing her from being allowed to go for a walk. Our picture can be dated to post-1871 from the address label attached to the stretcher which refers to Bramley, near Guildford, Surrey.
