Oscar Edmund Berninghaus Biography

(b 1874; d 1952) Berninghaus's reputation rests both on his skill as an artist and the accuracy with which he recorded the magnificent terrain and way of life in Taos, New Mexico. His career began as a commercial draftsman and illustrator, and throughout his life he stayed true to these roots, painting the expansive landscape with remarkable accuracy and with a sureness of brushstroke and line. He developed an interest in art through his family’s lithography business and studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. A trip to New Mexico in 1898 piqued his interest in the Southwestern landscape and people and he began splitting his time between St. Louis and Taos. Berninghaus took many commissions throughout his career, including illustrations for Anheuser-Busch and a mural for the Missouri State Capital building. His paintings of the people of Taos, especially the Native Americans, were realistic and matter-of-fact, as he was interested in capturing this distinctly American subject matter.
