Gerard Bilders Biography

(b Utrecht, 9 Dec 1838; d Amsterdam, 8 March 1865). Dutch painter. He received his first training from his father, the Romantic landscape painter Johannes Warnardus Bilders (1811–90). At the age of 17 he accepted the patronage of Johannes Kneppelhout (1814–85), a Dutch writer who did much to advance his career. Kneppelhout—who was notoriously meddlesome with his protégés—sent Bilders to The Hague, where for four years he learnt French and took drawing classes under Simon van den Berg. In addition he made studies after plaster casts at the Hague Academie and copied paintings in the Mauritshuis, for example Paulus Potter’s The Bull . In 1857 Bilders went to paint in Oosterbeek (a place known as the ‘Dutch Barbizon’ and already very familiar to his father). In Geneva the following year he took lessons with the landscape and animal painter Charles Humbert (1813–81), who transmitted to Bilders his special interest in the cattle pieces of the Dutch 17th-century masters and the French animal painter Rosa Bonheur. Humbert’s influence is particularly apparent in the freely painted cattle in Bilders’s large Swiss Landscape (c. 1859; The Hague, Gemeentemus.). On his return from a long walking tour of Switzerland, Bilders lived in Leiden for a year; in 1859 he moved permanently to Amsterdam. Around that time Kneppelhout, who was unhappy with the way Bilders’s work was developing, withdrew his financial support.
