John Jr Brewster Biography
(b hampton, ct, 30 or 31 may 1766; d buxton, me, 13 aug 1854). american painter. he was the son of dr john brewster, a prominent physician in hampton, ct, and his first wife, mary durkee. born a deafmute, brewster was taught at an early age to communicate through signs and writing. in addition he received instruction in painting from rev. joseph steward (17531822), a successful local portrait painter. essentially self-taught, steward painted portraits in the manner of ralph earl, who inspired a regional portrait style in connecticut in the 1790s. brewster began painting full-length likenesses of his family and friends in the mid-1790s, such as the double portrait of his parents (sturbridge, ma, old sturbridge village), which includes a regional landscape view in the background, a characteristic of connecticut portraiture of the period.
