Otto G Carlsund Biography

(b St Petersburg, 11 Dec 1897; d Stockholm, 25 July 1948). Swedish painter and critic. From 1922 to 1923 he studied at the Konstakademien in Oslo. The Swedish painter Adrian-Nilsson was influential in his development, notably with regard to his ‘musical’ paintings, in which he attempted through visual elements to achieve an auditory effect; the music of J. S. Bach inspired him in this. He maintained contact with, among others, Fernand Léger, Amédée Ozenfant and Mondrian while in Paris from 1924 to 1930, and during this period he was primarily interested in Cubism and geometric abstraction, influences reflected in The Chair (1926; Stockholm, Mod. Mus.). In 1929 he co-founded the Art Concret group in Paris with Theo van Doesburg, Jean Hélion, and the Armenian painter Leon Tutundjian (1905–68), and in 1930 he published their manifesto The Basis of Concrete Art in the first and only edition of Art Concret (see CONCRETE ART). Carlsund underwent a severe crisis in connection with an exhibition in Stockholm in 1930; he had difficulty in communicating through his modernist works, and from 1932 to 1945 he devoted himself less to painting, choosing instead to write prolifically. His radicalism was also reflected in his writing, which included art criticism, and his ideas often met with opposition, although in later years they attracted greater interest. He published his own magazine, Konstvärlden , from 1941 to 1945.
