Description: Lyell E. Carr American, 1857-1912 At the Church of San Luis after the firing ceased at the Battle of El Caney, July 1, 1898 Signed and inscribed Copyright 1898 by Lyell Carr (ll); inscribed extensively on the reverse At the Church of San Luis after the firing ceased/ at the battle of El Caney, July 1, 1898./ 7 miles N.E. of Santiago de Cuba./ Painted by LYELL CARR/ from original sketches made by him. Oil on canvas 21 1/4 x 31 1/8 inches Provenance: Mrs. Francis Swanton, New York Exhibited: New York, American Society of the French Legion of Honor Born in Chicago, Lyell E. Carr spent a year in Paris in 1884, studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. The young artist was so influenced by his academic training that he never abandoned the careful draftsmanship that he learned from his instructors, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. Although Carr is best known for southern genre scenes, he executed a number of paintings depicting scenes from the Spanish-American War, presumably as a reporter for an American periodical, much as Winslow Homer documented events from the Civil War for Harper's Weekly. The present work depicts Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, commander of the First U. S. Volunteer Cavalry (later known as the Rough Riders). As former assistant secretary of the navy, Roosevelt had pushed for American involvement in the struggle for Cuban independence. C
