Gaston Chaissac Biography

(b Avallon, Yonne, 13 Aug 1904; d La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée, Nov 1964). French painter, draughtsman, sculptor and writer. As a child he was nervous and emotionally unstable, and a failure at school. From the age of 13 he worked in various odd jobs, for example as an apprentice to a harness maker who taught him to decorate yokes. Exempted from military service, he went to live with his sister in Villapourçon near Autun in 1931. In 1937 he joined his brother in Paris, but his shoemaker’s booth near the Rue Mouffetard was a financial disaster and he was forced into a series of menial jobs. Chaissac lived in the same block of flats as Otto Freundlich and his companion Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss (1892– c. 1955), who encouraged him to draw and paint and introduced him to the work of the Ecole de Paris. Chaissac took to abstraction immediately, frequenting Freundlich’s academy, Le Mur. Despite tentative and childlike beginnings, a fascinating vocabulary gradually emerged, based on shapes consciously related to prehistoric forms. Chaissac’s use of dark contours, both dividing objects and spaces and unifying them in rhythmic sequences, seems related to Freundlich’s chequered abstract work of the same period. Chaissac’s first exhibition (1938) was at the Galerie Garbo, where he attracted the attention of Albert Gleizes and Robert Delaunay.
