Christo Biography

(b Gabrovo, Bulgaria, 13 June 1935) Bulgarian sculptor and experimental artist. Born Christo Javacheff in Gobrovo Bulgaria. Christo attended the National Academy of Arts in Sofia from 1952-1956, after which he studied with the sculptor Wotruba in Prague. From 1958 to 1964 Christo lived in Paris, where he first envisioned ‘empaquetage’ (packaging), which began with the wrapping of small objects in cloth or plastic. Soon the scale of the projects increased, to where Christo began packaging landscapes and public buildings; a concept also recognized as environmental art, on which he often collaborates with his wife Jean-Claude. Christo’s notable architectural wrapping projects are: the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1969); Kunsthalle, Bern, Switzerland (1967-68); and the Pont Neuf in Paris (1985). Large scale landscape projects include a mile of coastline in Australia Wrapped Coast (1969); numerous trees in a Swiss park Wrapped Trees (1997-1998); a 24-mile fabric wall running through Sonoma and Marin Counties in California Running Fence (1967); the instillation of yellow and blue cloth umbrellas in areas of the US and Japan The Umbrellas (1991); and The Gates (2005), a project which involved numerous swaths of orange cloth mounted throughout Central Park in New York. In the planning process, Christo produces mixed media drawings of what the projects will look like once completed, which are considered works of art in their own right.
