(b paris, 29 aug 1794; d paris, 20 nov 1880). french painter. he entered the ecole des beaux-arts in 1812, where he studied with pierre guérin and became friendly with théodore géricault, eugène delacroix, ary scheffer and henry scheffer (1798–1862), jean alaux (1786–1864) and xavier sigalon. he won the prix de rome in 1817 with helen freed by castor and pollux (paris, ecole n. sup. b.-a.). while in rome, he made his salon debut in ...
