Ulysse Comtois Biography
(b Granby, Quebec, 2 March 1931). Canadian painter and sculptor. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal in 194950, at which time he became interested in the activities of Les Automatistes. From 1953 to 1955 he participated in their group exhibitions, including La Matière chante at the Galerie Antoine in Montreal in 1954 and Espace 55 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal in 1955. His painting of the 1950s was initially influenced by the spontaneous style of Les Automatistes. He then moved towards a more personal, controlled style shown by works such as The Shadow on the Table (1957; Montreal, Mus. A. Contemp.). In the second half of the 1950s he exhibited with the Association des Artistes Non-figuratifs in Montreal.
