Dean Cornwell Biography

(b Louisville, Kentucky, 1892; d New York, New York, 1960) American illustrator. Cornwell attended the Art Students League in New York in 1915. There he studied under and was greatly influenced by Harvey Dunn and Frank Brangwyn. In the 1930s and 1940s Cornwell had reached great success with his war posters, advertisements and illustrations; he designed advertisements for such well-known companies as Wyeth Laboratories, Palmolive Soap, Coca-Cola and General Motors, among others. His work was also featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Redbook, The American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping. Cornwell has exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. He also lectured at the Art Students League in New York and numerous other art societies and museums.
