Charles Cottet Biography

(b Le Puy, 12 July 1863; d Paris, Sept 1925). French painter and printmaker. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and trained under Alfred Roll and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. In 1885 he went to Brittany and until 1913 spent several months there each year, often in winter, staying at Camaret where he accompanied fishermen to the islands of Sein and Ouessant and attended religious festivals in the area. Brittany is the subject of most of his work, in particular the Breton harbours at twilight (e.g. Evening Light: The Port of Camaret , 1893; Paris, Mus. d’Orsay), stormy seascapes and scenes of bereavement. Combining symbolism and the ordinary lives of the Breton people, he attempted to address fundamental human issues in such paintings as Grief by the Sea (1908; Paris, Mus. d’Orsay), Marine Bereavement (Antwerp, Kon. Mus. S. Kst.) and The People of Ouessant Watching over a Dead Child (1899; Paris, Petit Pal.). The same sombre vision persists in the landscapes and genre scenes from his travels in Spain (1904) and Iceland (1907). Although Cottet was an admirer of Puvis de Chavannes and was associated with the Nabis painters, the dark tones and strong values of his work belong to the tradition of Realism. He was considered the leader of the BANDE NOIRE, a group that formed after he met Lucien Simon and André Dauchez (1870–1943) in 1895. After exhibiting with his friends Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard and Félix Vallotton in the galleries of Ambroise Vollard and of Louis Le Barc de Boutteville in Paris, Cottet embarked on a successful and prolific career, marked by his forceful personality and the originality of his work. He made 60 etchings between 1905 and 1910, but gradually stopped painting around 1913 after an illness.
