Salvador Dali Biography

(b Figueras, Spain, May 11, 1904; d Figueras, Spain, January 23, 1989) Spanish surrealist painter. Salvador Dali studied art in Madrid at the Real Academia de Bellas Arte de San Fernando. In 1929 Dali produced his first Surrealist film, Un Chien Andalou, and was asked by Andre Breton to join his Surrealist group. Dali’s work is characterized by dream imagery forming the landscape of his inner world. In 1934, due to clashes over his paintings and right-wing political views, Dali was kicked out of the official Surrealist group. After World War II, he consciously dissociated himself from the Surrealists and began to focus on a return to the techniques of the Old Masters. This combination of artistic execution and Surrealist tendencies created a synthetic style uniquely his own. After thirty years in the United States, Dali finally returned to Spain in 1970, where he lived the rest of his life.
