Marillier, in his seminal book of 1904, The Liverpool School of Painters, noted of William Davis: No man saw further than he into the opportunities of a quiet rural subject: a hedge, a stream, a drenched autumnal pasture, and flitting of light and shadow over an English sky, a farm with its sheltering trees and homely appurtenances. All this he felt keenly and thoroughly, and translated it into art, not only familiar and realistic, but touching, elevated, and on occasion, even grand

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: THE VICTOR signed and dated "Arthur A. Dixon. 1915" (lower right) oil on canvas 48 x 60 1/2 in. (122 x 153.6 cm.) PROVENANCE John Constable. Southgate Gallery, Shifnal. EXHIBITED London, Royal Academy, 1915, no. 479. Bristol, City Art Gallery, 1915. LITERATURE Royal Academy Pictures, 1915, p. 54 (illustrated). Grant Walters, Dictionary of British Artists, 1975, pl. 179. Dixon was a painter of genre scenes and historical subjects, as well as a profic illustrator of children's books and magazines. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1897-1915), at the Royal Society of British Artists (1892-4), and in the provinces. He is recorded living in London, Horsham, Petworth and Berkhampstead. The present picture, one of the last he showed at the Academy, is representative of his style, which would appear to owe a good deal to E.A. Abbey and often borrows motifs from Holbein. His picturesque view of history was shared by many British artists at the time; compare, for example, the work of the Birmingham artist Frederick William Davis (1862-1919) or that of Stephen Reid (1873-1948). Reid's picture The Appeal for Mercy, sold in these Rooms on 6 November 1995, lot 134, was very close to the present one in psychology and feeling.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM DAVIS (1812-1873) A Welsh Watermill ; and A Bridge over a River, North Wales; signed 'W. Davis'(lower left and rightrespectively) oil on canvas 12 1/2 x 16 1/2in (31.7 x 41.9cm); a pair (2) Both the locations are in Snowdonia near Bettwys-y-Coed Davis began his career as a portrait painter in Dublin before moving to England. He settled in Liverpool c.1842, and turned to landscape painting from c.1850. From Liverpool he visited North Wales inspired by the scenery of Snowdonia. The small scale perfection and delicate visual quality of his work at this time was greeted with enthusiasm by Ford Madox Brown and Rossetti. The artist was friendly with a number of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, and his work became more minute and precise under the influence of their work. For another landscape by Davis , circa.1865, and comparable in style to these -cf. ..'A landscape at Bidston ' Bonhams 6 Dec 2000. Lot 76.

Description: MARY'S WELL, NEAR ST. ASAPH (?) signed "W. Davis" (lower right) oil on artist's board 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. (34.3 x 47 cm.) EXHIBITED Possibly London, Royal Academy, 1859, no. 366 ("Mary's Well, near St. Asaph"). Davis was one of the leading members of the Liverpool school of Pre-Raphaelite painters. He began to exhibit at the Liverpool Academy in 1842, becoming a full member in 1853 and holding the post of Professor of Drawing 1856-59. He also showed at the Royal Academy in London, 1851-72. His early work included still life and figure subjects, but from about 1853 he concentrated on landscape. By the mid-1850s he was in touch with the Pre-Raphaelites in London. Rossetti and Madox Brown both admired his work, and he showed at the circle's private exhibition in Russell Place in 1857 and at the Hogarth Club from 1858. He also shared the patronage of the northern collectors who bought their work - John Miller of Liverpool, James Leathart of Newcastle, George Rae of Birkenhead. On the whole, however, he met with little success, and Madox Brown described him as "one of the most unlucky artists in England." About 1870 he moved to London, where he died three years later, leaving a wife and some dozen children in very precarious circumstances. Examples of his work are in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead. The former acquired the Self-Portrait which appeared in these Rooms on 2 November 1990, lot 276a.

Lot 120: William Davis (1812-1873)

Description: a sunny day signed W.DAVIS l.r., oil on canvas 30.5 by 46 cm.; 12 by 18 in. This landscape by William Davis, who was born in Ireland but who lived and worked in Liverpool, exemplifies the Pre-Raphaelite landscape technique used by artists of the Liverpool school. Opaque or transparent glazes were laid on to, and allowed to mix with, a ground of wet white, so that the whole composition shines with an inner luminosity. This is particularly effective in a sunlit subject such as the present. Another of Davis's Pre-Raphaelite traits and one that he shared with artists such as George Price Boyce and John William Inchbold, was an abhorrence of conventionally picturesque subjects. In the present painting a shepherd and flock are seen, with a view of some kind of an earthwork or construction beyond. Further up the hillside a bridge carries a road or railway line over an expanse of water. H.C. Marillier wrote of the artist's 'brilliantly illuminated countryside or quiet evening landscapes' such as the present: 'This love of nature as he found it, and contempt for the rearrangement of details which almost all artists find necessary, was pre-eminently characteristic of Davis.' (The Liverpool School of Painters, 1904, p. 104).
