Jose De Rivera Biography
(b west baton rouge, la, 18 sept 1904; d new york, 19 march 1985). american sculptor. he grew up on a sugar plantation and refinery in louisiana, where his father was an engineer. the experience he gained as a blacksmith and in the maintenance of machinery proved useful when he later began constructing sculpture in metal. in 1924 he settled in chicago, il, and attended night classes at the studio school of art. john norton (18771934), his instructor in life classes, recognized the sculptural quality in de riveras drawings and encouraged him to experiment with three-dimensional work. in 1930 de rivera produced his first sculptures. these figurative pieces, including the female bust (1930; artists estate, see 1972 exh. cat., p. 1), carved from a single brass rod, are related to the streamlined, elegant designs of art deco. his works of the early 1930s are also indebted to the cubist-inspired polished torsos of alexander archipenko, whose work was exhibited in chicago during the 1920s, and to brancusis golden bird (1919), which was in the collection of the arts club of chicago by 1927.
