Michelozzo Di Bartolomeo Biography
(b Florence, 1396; d Florence, 7 Oct 1472). Italian sculptor and architect. He was both an extremely talented sculptor and one of the pioneers of Renaissance architecture. He was extensively employed by the Medici family, especially Cosimo de Medici, becoming in effect his personal architect. His success can be attributed to an enthusiasm for innovation and a willingness to tailor his designs to his clients wishes. Characteristic of his work is the variety of styles, sometimes with medieval and Renaissance elements placed together in the same design.
