Gustave Dore Biography

(b Strasbourg, France, 1832; d Paris, France, 1883) French Painter. At the age of 15, in Paris, France, Gustave Doré was hired as an illustrator by Charles Philipon. By the age of 16, he had become the highest paid illustrator in France. His commissions included illustrating the work of Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Poe, and Byron. In December of 1865, four Doré folios were published in Britain, quickly followed by the commission for his most ambitious project Doré's English Bible (1865). The Bible, simultaneously published in ten countries, was a great success and in 1867 Gustave Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London.* Although his illustrations led to the foundation of the Dóre Gallery, for the artist, illustration was secondary to painting. Doré's approach to landscape painting is completely descriptive, something that was unusual for the time. Upon first inspection, his work may be seen as a successor to the Romantic views of the beginning of the 19th century. However, his landscapes fall outside the confines of any school or movement. To Doré, the illustrator, the landscape is so powerful and majestic in its own right there is no need for further embellishment. Doré continued to illustrate until his death in 1883 in Paris.
