Jan van Eyck (1385-1441)
Jan Van Eyck Biography
(b Maaseik, Netherlands c. 1395; d Bruges, 1441) Dutch painter and illuminator. While the exact date and location of Van Eyck’s birth is unclear, it is known that his greatest achievement as a late medieval painter was his innovative manipulation of paint and surface. He contributed an increase in realism to painting and was known for his unique methods of “tricking” the viewer’s eye. As an artist, Van Eyck enjoyed high economic and social status due to his two major court appointments: the court of John of Bravia from 1422-25 and of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy from 1425 until his death in 1441. He is known for his masterpiece, the Ghent Altarpiece (1432), which reveals his contributions to the development of realism in painting and of natural observation.
