Angus Fairhurst (b.1966) man abandoned by space,

Lot 74: Angus Fairhurst (b.1966) man abandoned by space,

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Angus Fairhurst (b.1966) man abandoned by space, 1992 acrylic on panel, collection of 150 works, varying sizes (150) Provenance: Galerie Analix Forever, Geneva. Exhibited: 'Angus Fairhurst', 18 December 1992 - 30 January 1993, Galerie Analix Forever, Geneva. Following successful one-person exhibitions at Karsten Schubert Ltd., London, in 1990 and 1991, Man Abandoned by Space was the artist's first international solo exhibition, held at Galerie Analix in Geneva. Fairhurst chose an image of a jumping figure as the central motif for the show, representing it in moving images on a pair of monitor screens and in a huge series of some 800 paintings, showing this male figure in various stages (or milliseconds) of this jump. It is rumoured that half were eventually destroyed by UK customs as they were delivered back to London, whilst the rest have since been dispersed. This current lot comprises the single largest collection of this now infamous work. As the artist himself explains in the exhibition catalogue: " Man Abandoned by Space is based on an element of illusion whilst being part of the same illusion, like when a Cinquecento artist painted himself in the crowd, looking out of a surface surrounded by fake perspective. The material itself joins in. It's a complete story in its appearance, it doesn't continue beyond what can be seen in the image and its installation. Anyway, everybody knows that about art objects: however much time they cram into the proposed offer, they are static, which means they exist never and forever, for as long as they are not destroyed." [ Angus Fairhurst, Exhibition Catalogue, Galerie Analix, 1992, p. 29]. The jumping figure is a central theme recurring in much of the artist's output during the early 1990's, a period in which he shared a studio with Damien Hirst. Indeed, this theme is famously reused in a black and white photograph he exhibited at Karsten Schubert in 1993 entitled Man Abandoned by Colour , in which the jumping figure is placed in front of one of Hirst's spot paintings in the studio. The work reads in an entirely different way to Man Abandoned by Space as the contextualization of the jumping figure reveals it as either an ironic display of self-parodying exasperation at his own work or an ecstatic leap of joy for the obvious brilliance for that of his friend. Belittling the impending success of those close to us, whilst publicly displaying one's own state of anguish and despair, is a typical example of British slapstick humour. Public displays of excitement for someone else's success are most certainly not, and it is this ambiguity in the work that allows a more introspective exploration of Fairhurst's somewhat skewed but certainly idiosyncratic style of conceptualism. In fact, it is something that seems to sum up very neatly the attitudes this group of iconoclastic young British artists had towards the art establishment at that time and (bizarrely) their role within it; one that quite literally tore up the artist's manual and which still reverberates around the world today.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Man with Dream Colours four Cibachrome prints mounted on board with plastic garment attachments each: 40 x 40in. (101 x 101cm.) Executed in 1992, this work is unique. 4 PROVENANCE Galerie Analix, Geneva. LITERATURE 'Angus Fairhurst', Geneva 1992 (illustrated in colour, pp. 12-13). 'Hirst Fairhurst Hume Coventry Quinn', London 1999 (illustrated in colour, p. 11). NOTES In 'Man with Dream Colours', Angus Fairhurst addresses the way that the meaning of a picture may be interrupted by the method of its presentation. By presenting fields of small plastic tags, he punctures the picture plane for the viewer in a self-parodying seduction. Four photographs of the artist in his studio depict him brashly holding up primary coloured panels to our attention. The tags come to represent the price tags attached to objects, thus giving them value. In this way Fairhurst depicts the irony of art as an expression of language and its being perceived as a commodity, displayed in market price. According to the artist: "The plastic tags...stand in for that whole consumer/producer angle, like an apostrophe does for a letter. Thousands of them together look like a mass of little marks that have created a new word...It is a strange thing to put holes in flesh even if it is only a picture. But the tags act in two ways, they may push you away, but first they draw you in, or the other way round...interrupting the progress of the image." (Angus Fairhurst, 'Angus Fairhurst', Galerie Analix, Geneva 1992). Fairhurst, like Hume, Hirst and other British artists in the nineties looked to self-parodying seductions of British advertising. Echoing his Pop-Art predecessors, Fairhurst draws on the brash, seductive, media-conscious and market-wise characteristics of much of British culture.

Description: Piet C-print with UV laminate 96 x 72in. (243.8 x 192.8cm.) Executed in 1996, this work is no.3 from an edition of 6 + 1 AP PROVENANCE Sadie Coles HQ, London, where acquired by the present owner. EXHIBITION Amsterdam, Galerie Paul Andriesse, 'Angus Fairhurst - A Cheap and Ill-fitting Relationship', 1996. London, Sadie Coles HQ, 'Sarah Lucas Angus Fairhurst: Odd-Bod Photography', 1998. Cologne, Klnischer Kunstverein, 'Angus Fairhurst', 1998. NOTES The gorilla has played a central role in the iconography of Angus Fairhurst, being depicted in various media from photography and video to countless drawings. "The gorilla's appeal is that it can stand in for the human figure in a Darwinian sense, possessing near human form, but does away with the need for characterisation." (A. Gallagher, in: 'Dimensions Variable. New Works for the British Council Collection', London 1997, p. 77.) After exploring the symbol of the gorilla in his drawings, Fairhurst soon began making videos of himself in a gorilla costume. "The gorilla image was brought to life and adopted by the artist as a form of alter ego." (ibid.).
