Beni Ferenczy Biography
(b szentendre, 18 june 1890; d budapest, 2 june 1967). sculptor, medallist, watercolourist and draughtsman, son of (1) károly ferenczy. he studied drawing at the free school at nagybánya. in 1909 he travelled to florence, where he studied modelling with joseph beer and giuseppe cassioli (b 1865), and at the akademie der bildenden künste in munich he studied wood-carving with balthasar schmidt (b 1858). his interest in medals was aroused by another hungarian student in munich, józsef reményi (18871977). between 1911 and 1913 ferenczy continued his studies in paris under emile-antoine bourdelle and later, at the académie libre russe, under alexander archipenko. during this period he spent his summers at nagybánya. throughout world war i he lived in budapest. ferenczys début as an artist coincided with the appearance in hungary of cubism and futurism, and with the emergence of two groups: the neos at nagybánya and the group of eight, while his later work developed parallel to that of the activists. although his early work displays close similarities with these trends, it also shows a conscious link with the classical greek tradition and other major periods of european sculpture. the main features of his style at this time can best be seen in one of his large-scale male nudes, dévi (bronze, h. 605 mm, 1918) and his portrait of jános wilde (bronze, h. 410 mm, 1918; both budapest, n.g.).
