a
working-class
background;
orphaned
in
childhood,
he
moved
to

Petersburg,

embroidery,

buildings

icons,

tasks
such
as
retouching
photographs
and
making
posters
and
wrappers
for
goods

practical
apprenticeship
he
never
forgot).
His
interest
in
drawing
and
painting
developed
through
