Artemesia Gentileschi Biography
(b Rome, 8 July 1593; d Naples, 1652/3). Daughter of (1) Orazio Gentileschi. She was the first Italian woman whose artistic achievements not only were praised by her contemporaries but also influenced the work of other artists. She spread her first-hand knowledge of the work of Caravaggio beyond Rome to Florence, Genoa and Naples, where, in her exceptional career, she worked at different times. From the beginning she refused to limit herself to portraits, still-lifes and small devotional pictures, the staples of most women artists in the 16th and 17th centuries, but established herself immediately as an ambitious history painter.
