Alberto Giacometti Biography

(b Borgovono, Switzerland, 1901; d 1966) Swiss painter and sculptor. In 1919-20 Giacometti studied at les Beaux-Arts and the School of Arts et Metiers in Geneva, before settling to work in Paris. During 1946-1947 Giacometti fully realized his visionary, weightless approach to sculpture. He was creating figures in attenuated vertical forms, ranging in height from only a few inches to nearly life-size. Rather than fleshing out the armature, the plaster seemed to shrink around it, as if it were clinging to it for dear life. These figures were utterly unprecedented, unless one went back to the most primitive works of the ancient man. Giacometti appeared to have taken on the challenge of reinventing the very idea of sculpture for his time.* By 1950, however, he felt that he had exhausted the possibilities inherent in the attenuated, stick-like figures that made him famous in Europe and America. His eagerness to move beyond these works also had much to do with casting off the stifling burden of their success and the expectations that they had fostered in the public eye. He now sought to reclaim a more realistic and concrete sense of space, without sacrificing the acute degree of expressivity that he had worked so long and hard to achieve. A renewed interest in painting, set in motion by his passion for drawing, proved to be the key in this next stage in his development.** In this final stage, Giacometti produced portraits of subjects such as his brother Diego, wife Annette, and mistress Caroline.*** (Credit: *Christie’s, New York, Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale, May 6, 2008, lot 32; **Christie’s, New York, Impressionist and Modern Art (Evening Sale), November 1, 2005, lot 29; ***Christie’s: New York, Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale, November 6, 2007, lot 74)
