Red Grooms Biography

(b Nashville, TN, 1937) American Painter and Sculptor. Charles Rogers Grooms, nicknamed “Red” because of his hair color, attended The Art Institute of Chicago and Peabody College. In 1956, he moved to New York to study at the New School for Social Research. There, he was influenced by many styles of art. He was initially a painter, but then began to experiment in performance pieces called “Happenings.” From there, he started to work in animation, collaborating with Yvonne Anderson. In the mid 1960s, Grooms began to create his signature “sculpto-pictoramas,” which combine painting and sculpture. These sculpto-picturamas often focus on the diversity and lively atmosphere of cities. Most of these images are dedicated to his life in New York City, where Grooms currently lives and works.
