Lot 37: Robert Hay (1799-1863)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Illustrations of Cairo.] London: Tilt and Bogue, 1840]. 2o (543 x 370mm). Lithographed throughout, 2-colour 'additional' title, uncoloured dedication to Edward William Lane, 30 tinted lithographic views on 29 sheets, by T.S. Boys, T. Bourne, J.C. Bourne and L. Haghe, after Owen B. Carter, C. Laver and Hay, printed by Hullmandel, Day & Haghe or M. & N. Hanhart. (Bound without letterpress title or text). Original red cloth, title blocked in gilt on upper cover, neatly rebacked to style in red straight-grained morocco, modern red cloth box, morocco lettering-piece. A fine copy of Hay's Cairo. The present copy, like the Abbey copy, is bound without the letterpress title and twelve leaves of text. Robert Hay, who inherited the estate of Linplum from his brother James, was one of the most fascinating figures in early Egyptian archeaology and exploration. "He was in Egypt as one of the leading members of an archaeological expedition between 1826 and 1838. [After staying in Cairo, where he executed the drawings from which the beautiful plates in the above work made, he moved to Qurna.] Among his companions were the artists Arundale, Catherwood, J. Bonomi the younger, and E. W. Lane. Besides Egyptian antiquities presented to the British Museum, there are in the department of manuscripts there forty-nine large volumes of archaeological and other drawings made during this expedition,... and also part of Hay's own diary... In 1840 Hay published a folio volume of 'Illustrations of Cairo,' lithographed by J. C. Bourne from drawings by O.B. Carter and Owen Browne Carter (1806-1859), "architect and draughtsman, spent most of his life at Winchester, where he had a large local practice as an architect. About 1829-30 he travelled to Egypt in company with Mr. Robert Hay of Linplum, and resided for some length of time at Cairo. There he executed a large number of architectural and topographical drawings, several of which are preserved in the Print Room at the British Museum. A selection of these drawings was lithographed under Carter's superintendence by J.C. Bourne and others, and published in 1840 by Mr. Hay in a folio volume entitled 'Illustrations of Cairo'" Abbey Travel I. 270' Blackmer 794; Gay 2497; Ibrahim-Hilmy I, p.292.

Lot 65: LOUIS HAGHE (1806-1885)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: QUEEN VICTORIA INVESTING LOUIS-PHILIPPE WITH THE ORDER OF THE GARTER, 11 OCTOBER 1844 signed "L. Haghe" (strengthened signature); pencil and watercolour heightened with gum arabic and bodycolour 21 x 28 in. (533 x 720 mm.) PROVENANCE With Frost & Reed Louis-Philippe visited Windsor in 1844. The French King was greatly impressed by Windsor Castle and much admired the State Apartments in which he was placed. The Apartments had been built for Charles II by Hugh May, and decorated with paintings by Verrio and wood-carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Louis-Philippe admired everything, from the view from the North Terrace to the splendour of the art treasures. The Queen wrote of his visit "He is enchanted with the Castle, and repeated to me again and again (as did also all his people) how delighted he was to be here". Louis-Philippe's investiture with the Order of the Garter, which was placed on his leg by Prince Albert, pleased Louis-Philippe, more than anything else, for until he received this honour he said he did not feel he belonged to the "club" of European sovereigns. The French King endeared himself to the Queen through his evident respect for Prince Albert and amazed her with reminiscences of his life in exile, when he taught under an assumed name in a Swiss School for twenty pence a day (see H. and A. Gernsheim, Queen Victoria, 1959, p.49). The present watercolour is a variant of the watercolour by Haghe in the Royal Collection (repr. H. and A. Gernsheim, op.cit., pl.91) and also differs from that belonging to the Comte de Paris, exhib. Paris, Archives Nationales, Louis-Philippe, 1973-4, no.4. We are grateful to Delia Millar for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A panoramic view of the city of Funchal, in the Island of Madeira. Weymouth, London, and Madeira: B. Benson, D. Bogue, and R. Innes, 1844. Oblong folio, (31 x 42cm). Letterpress title, dedication, lists of subscribers and note by E. G. Smith, folding lithographic panorama by Haghe after Smith on three sheets, joined (overall 31 x 115cm). (Some spotting and light discolouration to panorama.) Publisher's leather-backed boards, tooled and lettered in gilt, leather label on upper cover, publisher's label inside upper cover (extremities rubbed, upper cover somewhat faded). A rare and unusual panaroma of Funchal, the capital of Madeira, showing the fort, the numerous country houses ( quintas ) with their terraced gardens, sugar-cane plantations, and vineyards, which then surrounded Funchal, the town itself, the mountains behind (some rising to 4,000ft) and in the distance some of the outlying islands of the archipelago. Elizabeth Smith is given by her married name on the title-page, Mrs Reginald Southwood Smith, but signs the text leaf 'E.G.S'. In the latter she makes both general and specific observations, and refers the reader to Picken's Views of Madeira and an essay in the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal. Not in Abbey Travel ; not in Tooley.

Lot 97: FOSSATI, Gaspard (1809-1883). Aya Sofia Constantinople, as recently restored by order of H.M. the Sultan Abdvl Medjid. London: P. and D. Colnaghi, August 14th 1852.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 2o (552 x 361mm). Chromolithographic title, 25 tinted lithographic plates by Louis Haghe after Fossati. Accompanying text in French. (Some light soiling of plate margins, plates rehinged.) Original publisher's morocco-backed cloth, full title stamped in gilt on upper cover, short title on spine (recased, extremities worn). According to Abbey, this impressive book was also published in Paris, the text by the Vicomte Adalbert de Beaumont being in French for both editions. Fossati, an Italian architect who worked in Russia before travelling to Constantinople in 1837, entered the service of the Porte in 1845, and in 1847 was charged with the restoration of Aghia Sophia. Although the separate work he intended to publish on the mosaics never appeared, and they were again covered up once the restoration work had been done, this is the first modern record of both the exterior and interior of the building. As Abbey notes, the lithographs represent the last work undertaken by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) before he broke off his connection with William Day to concentrate on water-colour painting, and the subject was an appropriate one for a lithographer who had spent nine years of work on Roberts's Holy Land. The chromolithographic title is probably by Owen Jones. Abbey Travel 396; Blackmer 619.
