Description: Silence glass 497/8 x 367/8 x 231/8in. (127 x 92.7 x 59.1cm.) Executed in 1994. This work from an edition of five and is accompanied by a photo-certificate signed by the artist. Other examples of this work are in the collections of The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek and Museum of Modern Art, New York. PROVENANCE Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris LITERATURE M. Archer, G. Brett, C. de Zegher, Mona Hatoum, London 1997, p. 31 (illustrated) EXHIBITION New York, Brooke Alexander, Willie Doherty, Mona Hatoum, Doris Salcedo, October-November 1994 Otterloo, Rijkmuseum Kroller-Muller, Heart of Darkness, December 1994-March 1995 New York, The Museum of Modern Art, Sculpture from the collection, June-August 1995 (illustrated; another example exhibited) Paris, Galerie Chantal Crousel, Vendanges, September-November 1995 Wien, Kunsthalle Wien; Prague, Galerie Rudolfinum, Engel; Engel, June-November 1997, p. 259 (illustrated) New York, Museum of Modern Art, Making Choices, March-September 2000 (another example exhibited) NOTES Talking about one of her recent works, Mona Hatoum explained that she was "trying to create a feeling of unease...to destabilize the space, so that when you walk in, you literally feel the ground shift below your feet." Yet the intense emotions her work provoke come also from the complex chain of associations that these purely physical sensations accompany. In Silence, for example, Mona Hatoum has built a small cage of glass tubes, which seems to hover weightlessly. That the fragile structure can easily be shattered does not make it any less threatening, especially since its shape suggests a child's crib, and hence, it evokes an absent but vulnerable body. Mona Hatoum has long been fascinated by the fantasies that govern the sense of the body in an age dominated by technology. Recently she has used sound and video records of ordinary exploratory medical procedures in order to reveal the invisible and forbidding image of the body within. Silence can also be seen in this context, the hollow network of transparent tubes brings to mind the paraphernalia of research laboratories but also the interior of the body--organs, nerves, blood vessels. Thus the work becomes a metaphoric meeting place for the man-made and organic structures of which life depends. (Amelia Arenas, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1995).

Description: Roadworks (Performance Still) black and white photograph mounted on aluminium 30.1/8 x 43in. (76.5 x 110cm.) Executed in 1985-1995, this work is from an edition of 15 LITERATURE 'Mona Hatoum', London 1997 (another from the edition illustrated pp. 50-51). 'Sammlung Goetz. Art from the UK', Munich 1997 (another from the edition illustrated p. 94). NOTES Mona Hatoum, a Palestinian born in Lebanon and now living in exile in London, revels in challenging bourgeois conservatism and political optimism. Her complex oeuvre in numerous media takes its roots in the turbulent, if not subversive history of Happenings. In 1985, Hatoum executed two remarkable performances in Brixton as part of an event called 'Roadworks', organised by her friend and 'happening partner', Stefan Szczelkun. In the first action, Szczelkun and Hatoum created a human chain by lying on the ground and drawing police-like chalk lines around each other's body. In the following performance, she walked bare foot with heavy Doc-Marten boots attached to her ankles, the vulnerability of her bare skin being confronted by the menace of the massive boots. The artist commented: "I found that I was working 'for' the people in the streets of Brixton rather than 'against' the indifferent, often hostile audiences I usually encounter in the art world. In one of the pieces I walked around barefoot, dragging a pair of Doc-Marten boots attached to my ankles - that's what the police wear. These boots have become a symbol of the fascists because the National Front wear them as well." (In: 'Interview with Sara Diamond', in: 'Mona Hatoum', London 1997, p. 132.) Description: A Couple (of Swings) two swings--stainless steel chain and glass 96 x 26 x 51in. (245 x 66 x 130cm.) Executed in 1993. This work is number three from an edition of three. PROVENANCE CRG Gallery, New York LITERATURE M. Archer, G. Brett and C. de Zegher, Mona Hatoum, London 1997, p. 17 (illustrated). EXHIBITION Paris, Galerie Chantal Crousel, Mona Hatoum--Socle du Monde, September-October 1993 (another example exhibited). New York, CRG Gallery, Mona Hatoum, October-November 1994. Paris, Muse national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Mona Hatoum, June-August 1994, p. 22 (illustrated; another example exhibited). NOTES Mona Hatoum is an artist in exile; she is a Palestinian who was born in Lebanon and who moved to London in 1970 at the age of 18, where she studied at the Byam Shaw and Slade Schools. Her first works were politically charged performances and videos in which she enacted, through metaphor and suggestion, the suffering and oppression felt by her fellow Palestinians. Other works had been concerned with memory and loss and, in particular, the sense of loss in relationships and between family members. In the present work, A Couple (of Swings), the recollection evoked is that of childhood innocence and first love. The work is fragile and vulnerable, creating a sense of apprehension and disquiet in the viewer. Hatoum said, "I like to explore the sensuousness of materials and use them to create an emotional charge, if you like. In A Couple (of Swings) I feel that the elegance and coolness of the swings makes the tension of an impending disaster--they could swing towards each other and smash to pieces." (in "Interview: Michael Archer in conversation with Mona Hatoum" in M. Archer, G. Brett and C. de Zegher, Mona Hatoum, London, 1997, p. 17.).

Description: Marbles Carpet 500 kg of glass marbles, each with a diameter of 14mm. dimensions variable (maximum size of 19ft. 8in. x 13ft. - 600 x 400cm.) This work is one of the two identical installations subsequently made from the original piece that was conceived in 1995 for an exhibition at the British School at Rome. PROVENANCE Jay Jopling, London. LITERATURE 'life/live. La scŠne artistique au Royaume-Uni en 1996, de nouvelles aventures', Paris 1997 (original installation illustrated in colour, pp.70-71). M. Archer, G. Brett and C. de Zegher, 'Mona Hatoum', London 1997 (original installation illustrated in colour, p.79) 'Mona Hatoum', Milan 1999 (original installation illustrated in colour, p.24) EXHIBITION Rome, The British School at Rome, 'Mona Hatoum', Nov.1995 - Jan.1996 (detail of the original installation illustrated on the cover of the exhibition brochure). Bremen, Neues Museum Weserburg, 'MINIMAL MAXIMAL. Minimal Art and its Influence on International Art of the 1990s', Oct. 1998-Jan. 1999 (original installation illustrated in the catalogue in colour, p. 131). This exhibition travelled to Baden-Baden, Kunsthalle, Jan.-March 1999, and Santiago de Compostela, Centro Galego de Arte Cotemporanea, April-July 1999. NOTES The 1995 Marbles Carpet embodies Lebanese born Mona Hatoum's particular inclination for the minimalist archetypes. The theme of the carpet is especially recurrent in her oeuvre. Successively a praying mantle made of nails, an entrails rug, or a beautifully transparent marbles carpet, the materials used by the artist are charged with controversial, metaphorical or emotional references that contrast the strictness of the geometrical shapes. Hatoum explains her precise use of marbles: "I was in Rome trying to work out ideas for a piece, and I kept coming across marble everywhere. It made me wonder whether the marbles kids play with were called that because they were originally made of marble. (...) I came across these transparent (marbles) which had the additional quality of reflecting the light beautifully. So they looked very seductive but at the same time they created an unstable surface on which you could slip and fall." (M. Hatoum, In: 'Mona Hatoum', London 1998, p. 18) The later division of the piece into two identical carpets has not altered its spectacular quality: after its cellular division it follows the walls of the room it occupies, only leaving a very narrow band to walk around. In this work, Hatoum forces the viewer to resent the overwhelming presence of the sculpture that not only expand the medium of sculpture but also extend the body of the artist in the third dimension.

Description: Pull live video performance and installtion Concieved and first executed in 1995, this work is number 3 in an edition of 3. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Other work by this artist is included in 'Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection', currently on view at the Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. NOTES "Since my early performances, the body has been central to my work. Even before that I was making small works on paper using bodily fluids and body rejects as materials. I have always been dissatisfied with work that just appeals to your intellect and does not actually involve you in a physical way. For me the embodiment of an artwork is within the physiacl realm: the body is the axis of our perceptions, so how can art not afford to take that as a starting point? We relate to the world through our senses.... Meanings, connotations and associations come after the initial physical experience, intellect, psyche are fired off by what you've seen. (M.Archer, ' The body is the axis of our perception'. Interview with Mona Hatoum in 'Art from the UK. Sammlung Goetz', Munich 1997, p.98).

Description: Deep Throat table, chair, television, glass plate, fork, knife, water glass, laser disc, laser disc player 35 x 331/2 x 51 1/8in. (89 x 85 x 130cm.) Executed in 1996, this work is number two from an edition of three. LITERATURE Z. Felix (ed.), 'Emotion. Young British and American Art from the Goetz Collection', Ostfildern-Ruit 1998 (another from the edition illustrated in colour, p. 53; detail illustrated in colour, p. 52). NOTES Part of Mona Hatoum's ongoing investigation of the body and the social hierarchy that is often applied to its five orifices - a hierarchy that makes some aspects of our bodies taboo - 'Deep Throat' is a work that plays with the social niceties of eating in a restaurant by also exposing the physical reality of such an act. The humourous title which was also the title of a cult porno movie starring Linda Lovelace as well as the name of the government informer on the Watergate scandal, is a deliberate pun on the visual function of the work. At first glance, the installation appears to be an ordinary restaurant-like table setting for one. On the plate, framed by a knife and fork, however, appears the video image of an endoscopic journey through the mouth and into the stomach that the diner's food would take. Appearing on the plate, inevitable parallels between the meat we eat and the living meat of the human body are immediately brought to mind as the shock of the realisation of what we are seeing registers. At the same time the overt contradiction between the smart cleanliness of the place-setting and the ugly physical reality of the internal action that takes place all the time at such tables is a startling conjunction of opposites typical of Hatoum's work. 'Deep Throat' like 'Corps d'Etranger' or 'Look no Body' is an important part of Hatoum's exploration of societal attitudes to the human body.
