Biography: Herring
(b Surrey, England, 1795, d Tunbridge Wall, England, 1865) English painter. At the age of 18, Herring moved from London to Doncaster, where he was employed as an inn sign painter and a coach driver. He was known as the “artist coachman,” because he spent his spare time painting portraits of horses. Eventually, his talent was recognized, and Herring was commissioned to paint hunters and racehorses for the gentry. After 1836, Herring started to incorporate ‘SR’ at the end of his signature in order differentiate himself from his son, John Frederick Herring, Jr., who was also a successful Equestrian painter. In 1840, he visited Paris on the invitation of Duc d’Orleans, son of the French King Louis Phillipe I. In 1845, he was appointed Animal Painter to HRH, the Duchess of Kent, and Queen Victoria, who remained a patron for the rest of his life. Herring moved to Kent in 1853, where spent his time as a country squire, painting sporting works of hunting, racing, and shooting, as well as agricultural scenes and narrative pictures. Herring was a highly successful and prolific artist, who ranked, along with Sir Edwin Landseer, as one of the most eminent animal painter of mid-nineteenth century Europe. Herring’s paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Fine Art from 1818 to 1865; the British Institute from 1830 to 1852; and the Society of British Artists in 1836 to 1852, where he was the Vice-President in 1842.
