Henry Holiday was a noted historical genre and landscape painter, stained glass designer, illustrator and sculptor. In 1861, Holiday accepted the job of stained glass window designer for Powell's Glass Works after Burne-Jones had left to work for Morris & Co. During his time there he fulfilled over 300 commissions including customers in the USA. He left in 1891 to set up his own glass works in Hampstead, producing stained glass, mosaics, enamels and sacerdotal objects. Chartered Accountants' Hall, headquarters of ICAEW in the City of London, was built between 1890 and 1893. The original Hall, fronting on Moorgate Place, was designed by the architect John Belcher RA. The stained glass in the staircase window and elsewhere was carried out by Henry Holiday in 1898. The first extension was built by Belcher's partner, John James Joass, in 1930-31 as a continuation of the original design. A more radical expansion took place when in 1959 William Whitfield was commissioned to extend the building and provide a Great Hall for large gatherings. Provenance: Peter Grant (1935-1995), thence by descent. The man who Led Zeppelin: Peter Grant was, most famously, the manager of the band Led Zeppelin. Early in his life he had worked as a bouncer, wrestler and a film extra in movies such as The Guns of Navarone and Cleopatra. He became tour manager of Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent and The Animals before taking on the Yardbirds, who were later to become Led Zeppelin. When he flew to New York in 1968 to sign Led Zeppelin to Atlantic Records he secured the highest advance paid to any band at that time. He was instrumental in catapulting Led Zeppelin to superstardom and became one of the most powerful men in the music industry. Between concerts Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page would often visit antique markets and shops as they shared a passion for collecting Art Nouveau and Art Deco and related furniture and objects.

Description: PHARAOH: A CARTOON FOR THE ROBERT E. LEE MEMORIAL WINDOW IN SAINT PAUL S CHURCH, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, 1890 watercolor on paper. 431/4 by 21 in. (109.9 by 53.3 cm.) The cartoon for the Lee Memorial Window (the lower window) which was a gift of the Misses Stewart of Brook Hill, Richmond, Virginia, daughters of the late John and Amanda Williamson Stewart, bearers of an honored name in the annals of this community and Commonwealth, was designed by Henry Holiday and was among the very first executed in his own glassworks in England. The cartoon is drawn to approximately one-third scale, and was presumably enlarged to make the final working drawings for the window, which is more than nine feet. The subject, Moses leaving the Court of Pharaoh (which likened Lee to Moses), treated by the artist was chosen by Bishop Randolph, follower and kinsman of General Lee s, the text was likewise chosen by Bishop Randolph. Henry Holiday was born in 1839 and died in 1927. He began training as an artist at an early age and exhibited at the Royal Academy when he was 18. His earliest window is thought to have been one designed for Waltham Abbey in 1861. His first work in the United States was a window installed in a Church in Philadelphia in 1877. In 1890 Holiday made his first visit to the United States and at this time he was a guest at Brook Hill, and it was then that he studied the life and character of General Lee and conceived the window which was installed in 1892.
