Alexander Iacovleff Biography

(b St. Petersburg, 1887; d Paris 1938) Russian Painter. Born in St. Petersburg, Alexandre Iacovleff attended the Imperial Academy of Arts. Even as a student he drew inspiration from the classical form. His works can be characterized by their pure lines, fluid contours and carefully modeled forms. Iacovleff's two graduate works, In a Bathhouse and Bathing (1913), reveal his interest in the Old Masters; in particular the Flemish seventeenth-century school with their expressive forms and neo-classical style. After graduating from the Academy, Iacovleff officially received the title of Academician and was rewarded with a trip to Italy. From Italy, Iacovleff traveled through Europe and Central Asia, reaching Mongolia when news broke of the 1917 Revolution. Unable to return to Russia, he settled in Paris, but never lost the connection with his homeland. The Soviet government allowed him to exhibit in the USSR, holding a large solo exhibition at the Academy of Arts in 1928. Iacovleff's fame as an artist and traveler seemed to transcend politics.
