Johan Laurentz Jensen Biography
(b Gentofte, Denmark, 1800; d Copenhagen, Denmark, 1856) Danish painter.Johan Laurentz Jensen is often referred to as the 'father of Danish flower painting'. At the young age of fourteen, he enrolled at the Royal Academy, where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His talent attracted the attention of Crown Prince Christian Frederick, later King Christian VIII, who awarded him a traveling scholarship. Subsequently, Jensen visited Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Paris, before becoming an apprentice to Alexandre Brongniart, the director of the famous Sèvres porcelain factory, and under whom he honed his characteristically refined technique. His still-life paintings with flowers epitomize the extraordinary elegance and precocious eye for detail. (Credit: Sotheby’s, London, United Kingdom, The Scandinavian Sales, May 30, 2008, Lot 251.)
