Wassily Kandinsky Biography

(b Moscow, Russia 4 Dec 1866; d Neuilly-sur-Seine, France 13 Dec 1944) Russian painter, printmaker, art theorist. Educated to be a lawyer, Kandinsky left the profession in 1896 to study painting in Munch with Anton Azbe and later Franz von Stuck. In 1901, Kandinsky co-founded the Phalanx society, where he exhibited, taught classes and met his lifelong companion Gabriel Munter. Kandinky’s early work was influenced by the Art Nuevo style Jugendstil and Russian folklore. However after encountering the styles of the Fauvists and impressionists, his manner became increasingly non-representational and abstracted. In 1911, Kandisnky published an influential text Über das Geistige in der Kunst (On the Spiritual in Art), which detailed his theories about art, including studies in synestheisa--using color as a response to sound. The same year Kandisky formed the Blaue Reiter with fellow German artists Franz Marc, August Macke and Paul Klee; publishing the Blaue Reiter Almanac in 1912. After achieving success and international exhibitions, including Moscow, Germany, Amsterdam and New York, Kandinsky returned Russia in 1914 at the start of World War I where he continued his artwork and teaching. In 1921 he returned to Germany after receiving an invitation to teach at the newly established school of Bauhaus. In 1933 Kandinsky immigrated to Neuilly-sur-Seine France where he spent the reminder of his life painting and serving as a mentor to younger artists such as Miro and Magnelli.
