Peter Robert Keil Biography

Peter Robert Keil is a German painter, born in Züllichau in the Neumark (now in Poland). Keil's father had been killed on the Eastern Front during WWII. His mother and he made their way through the chaos of battered Germany to West Berlin. As a child Keil became intrigued with art reproduced in books found in his local library. He studied and copied works of the expressionists and of Pablo Picasso. In his teens he studied with the painter Otto Nagel who was his first teacher and mentor. After Keil taught him the painter’s craft and how to see, Keil entered Berlin’s Academy of Fine Arts. There his world of art opened with meeting many artists such as Baselitz and Schonebeck who in 1961 held a public presentation of their “Pandemonium Manifesto” at the Gorssgroschen 35 gallery. The construction of the Berlin Wall in that year cut off connections with his mentor Nagel, who was trapped behind the Wall in East Berlin. Keil traveled widely and frequently in search of art and artists and in so doing met Joan Miró in Majorca, Spain. He then established himself in Paris and thereafter London – then back to Berlin to produce more paintings. He painted in New York and in Florida. He owns a condo in south Florida. By the late 1970s to 80s, those free painters of expressionistic works in Germany marketed under the name of the “Neue Wilde” seemed apt. But this was a designation developed by art galleries rather than the artist themselves as there was no manifesto that unified them as a group. The term neo-expressionism might be a better term to describe the work of Keil who was once nicknamed the “Wild man of Berlin.”
