ORIGINAL VINTAGE WWII WINNER R. HOE & CO AWARD POSTER - SOMEONE TALKED BY KOERNER, 1942

Description: “Someone Talked!” is an award winning c.1942 WWII poster designed by Henry Koerner. Koerner created the artwork in response to the National War Poster Competition sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). The competition was co-sponsored by R. Hoe & Company, which began as a New York based printing press in 1805 but had shifted to parts manufacturing during WWII. There were 2,224 entries for the competition and 9 works were awarded special honors. Koerner won two of the nine awards. Of this selection of posters, this particular poster by Koerner is the most desirable among collectors. An exhibition was held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC in 1943. Henry Koerner (1915-1991) was a Jewish refugee who immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1938. Trained as a graphic designer, he immediately produced a number U.S. propaganda poster before being drafted into the Graphics Division during WWII. He was sent overseas to document wartime life and was present at the War Crimes Trials to sketch the defendants. After the war, Koerner embraced the Magic Realism art style. He is well known for his many Time Magazine covers, which included portraits done from life of the most important people of the mid-20th century including sitting President John F. Kennedy.
