Condition Report: Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure throughout. There are two shallow dents in the canvas pushing from the front to the back in the forehead and the headwrap of the sitter. There is some active paint flaking in the shoulder, with a corresponding missing paint flake. Inpaint in the forehead and the cheek of the woman. Some inpaint in the background to the left of the woman's face and in the upper edge of her headwrap. 2 inch horizontal line of inpaint in the headwrap. 1 x 1/2 inch area of repair in the headwrap. 1 x 3/4 inch area of repair in the neck. Painted circa 1864 NOTES Charles Landelle studied art in Paris under the tutorage of Paul Hippolyte Delaroche and attended the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He painted portraits, historic and Orientalist works which he exhibited at the Salon from 1841, and was commissioned to decorate various churches in Paris, including the Eglise Saint-Sulpice, Eglise Saint-Roch, and Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois. Although Landelle's oeuvre is rich in subject matter ranging from portraits and religious pictures to anecdotal historical scenes, he is best know for his orientalist compositions. Between 1853 and 1877, Landelle visited North Africa and the Middle East five times, travelling down the Nile Valley between 1875 and 1876, and to returned to Algeria on numerous occasions between 1880 and 1890.
