Description: Bloody Canvas ink on canvas 55 x 120 x 1in. (140 x 305 x 4cm.) Executed in 1995 NOTES Jackson Pollock described his paintings as "energy and motion made visible-memories arrested in space". In his work the canvas becomes an actual record of a creative moment which allows the viewer to access to the artist's thoughts and actions. In "Bloody Canvas" Abigail Lane is exploring "this primary link, which is crucial to traditional notions of authenticity and meaning". (S. Kent & J. Blyth 'Shark Infested Waters, The Saatchi Collection of British Art in the 90s', London, 1994, p. 44). In: 'Bloody Canvas' Abigail Lane echoes the action paintings of Pollock and the Anthropometric canvases of Yves Klein to acheive a more dramatic record of the actions and gestures of her own body. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note this is illustrated upside down in the catalogue.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Misfit wax, plaster, oil paint, human hair, clothing, glass eyes 23 x 33 x 75in. (60 x 85 x 192cm.) Executed in 1994 LITERATURE S. Kent & J. Blyth, 'Shark Infested Waters - The Saatchi Collection of British Art in the 90s', London 1994, p. 174 (illustrated in colour). S. Kent, Time Out (Sensations Special), London 1997 (illustrated in colour, p. 21). EXHIBITION London, Institute of Contemporary Arts, 'Abigail Lane, Skin of the Teeth', March-April 1995 (illustrated in the catalogue in colour, p. 25). London, Royal Academy of Arts, 'Sensation: Young British Artist's from the Saatchi Collection', Sept.-Dec. 1997 p.111, (illustrated in colour in the catalogue). NOTES "'Misfit' (1994) echoes the elegant pose of a Gainsborough gentleman gazing out over a pastoral landscape. But Lane's gentleman of leisure equally represents a down and out; he is simultaneously reclining and crawling, nonchalant and abject. He seems to hover somewhere between exhibitionism and pure forgetfulness; he has no pants on. The shock of the work resides partly in that this is not the familiar nudity of fine art- it is not female. Lane scrambles the reassuring aesthetics of nudity and transforms them into an evocation of nakedness. (I. Blazwick,in 'Repeating the Unrepeatable, Abigail Lane', London 1995, p.40).

EXHIBITION London, Serpentine Gallery, "Here & Now", June-July 1995 (illustrated in the catalogue). London, Institute of Contemporary Art, "Skin of the Teeth. Abigail Lane", March-April 1995, no. VII (illustrated in the catalogue in colour, pp. 20-21). NOTES "For me, it's more powerful to leave things unsaid, or quiet, or empty, than to really go in and try to make something shocking or spooky. It's like watching a suspense film - what goes on in your head is so much more powerful than what you see, so if you're constantly expecting something, your imagination runs wild" ("Brilliant - New Art From London", Minneapolis 1995.).
