Julio Le Parc Biography
(b Mendoza, 23 Sept 1928). Argentine kinetic artist. He was one of the most active members of the large group of South American artists who established themselves in Paris in the 1950s and played a major role in the launching of KINETIC ART in Europe in the next decade. He studied under Lucio Fontana at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires between 1942 and 1954, before going to Paris in 1958. There he visited Victor Vasarelys studio and met the gallery owner Denise René, who had already established herself as the leading Parisian sponsor of geometrical and kinetic art. In 1960 Le Parc joined 11 other artists, including Francisco Sobrino and his Argentine colleagues Hugo Demarco (b 1932) and Horacio García Rossi (b 1929), in founding the GROUPE DE RECHERCHE DART VISUEL. His reputation was founded on the theoretical stringency and active exhibiting policy of this group, but in 1966 he was awarded the Grand Prix for painting at the Venice Biennale. Ironically this acclaim was offered to a member of a group anxious to repudiate the notion of the celebrated individual artist.
