Maxwell Gordon Lightfoot Biography

(b Liverpool, 19 July 1886; d London, 27 Sept 1911). English painter and draughtsman. He studied at Chester Art School from c. 1901 until c. 1905. Between 1905 and 1907 he was apprenticed as a chromolithographer and attended evening classes at the Sandon Terrace Studios, Liverpool, under Herbert McNair (1865–1955) and Gerard Chowne (1875–1911), whose flower paintings influenced Lightfoot’s earliest works. On Chowne’s advice he studied at the Slade School in London from 1907 until 1909 where he won several prizes, including the Melville Nettleship prize for figure drawing with Interior of a Barn with Resting Labourers (1909–10; London, U. Coll., Slade Sch. F.A.).
