Description: 1753-c.1823 portrait of admiral james cranstoun, 8th lord cranstoun (1755-1796) half length, wearing uniform inscribed on the reverse: Jacubus Dominus Cranstoun Aetatis 39/Drawn 1794 oil on velum 23 by 20cm., 9 by 8in. Commissioned Lieutenant in 1776, and Captain in 1782, Cranstoun commanded Rodney's flagship, the Formidable, in his celebrated victory over the French in 1782, and was mentioned in despatches. On 17th June 1795, as commander of the Bellerophon, he took notable part in the repulse of a much larger French fleet off Britanny and received the thanks of Parliament. In 1796 he was appointed Governor of Grenada and Vice-Admiral, but died before he took up his post. Livesay's two paintings of the action of 17th June 1795 were exhibited at the Royal Academy that year.
