Description: South Ferry (forestudy Rapsody in Blue) signed, dated and inscribed with title on the reverse Adriaan Lubbers 1953, and signed and dated and inscribed with title again on the stretcher oil on canvas 59 x 72 cm PROVENANCE Kunsthandel Wending, Amsterdam, from whom acquired by the present owner circa 1980 LITERATURE Adriaan Venema, Adriaan Lubbers' New York, Mijdrecht 1980, p.48 (ill.) NOTES "Only once after the war did Lubbers work for a longer period in New York. He came to produce work which in no way was related to his prewar oeuvre. It is built up in planes, nearly looking like leaded glass. The colours were glaring, 'American' as it was called in his days. It looks as if, at the end of his life, he tried to go back to the traditions of the Twenties, as now, after so many years, the work looks much more 'pre-war' than what he produced before 1940 and still looks surprisingly modern. It is proof of the unique artistic personality which Lubbers was. He was one of the few who saw the fascinating beauty, but also the horror of the big city." ( op.cit. Venema, p. 48).
