Charles Lucy Biography
(b Hereford, 1814; d Notting Hill, London, 19 May 1873). English painter. He studied first in London, then in Paris under Paul Delaroche at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1883 he returned as a student to the Royal Academy and then spent two years copying Old Master paintings in Paris and The Hague for a private patron. His first history painting, the Interview between Milton and Galileo , was hung at the Royal Academy in 1840, and thereafter he divided his time between England and France. He lived for 16 years at Barbizon but, instead of joining the landscape painters there, chose to concentrate on significant scenes from British history. In England he was a regular contributor to the fresco competitions for the New Palace of Westminster: in 1844 he was awarded a £100 premium; in 1847 his Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers won an award of £200. For some years he taught at a drawing school in Camden Town, London, where his pupils included Thomas Seddon, a member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, with which he was also associated. In 1853 he was elected chairman of the committee of the new British Institution. His portrait painting was also admired, and he was commissioned to execute a series of portraits of eminent figures, past and present, which was bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
