SONJA FERLOV MANCOBA Denmark 1911-1984 Female
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba Biography
(b Copenhagen, 1 Nov 1911; d Paris, 1985). Danish sculptor, draughtswoman and painter, active in France. She trained in Copenhagen with Bizzie Høyer (193031) and at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi (19324). In 1936 she moved to Paris, marrying the South African painter ERNEST MANCOBA in 1942. She lived the rest of her life in Paris, apart from the years 194752, when she returned to Denmark. She developed an early connection with the artists group Linien (The Line) in 19379. Around this time she produced abstract drawings incorporating graffiti-like masses of calligraphic shapes (e.g. Drawing , 1939; Copenhagen, Stat. Mus. Kst) and paintings using flat areas of contrasting colour and shape (e.g. Painting , 1939; Silkeborg, Kstmus.). In the 1940s she formed part of the COBRA group.
