Biography: Mangold

(b North Tonawanda, NY, 1937). American Painter. Robert Peter Mangold studied painting at the Cleveland Art Institute from 1956 – 1959. He received his MFA (1963) and BFA (1961) from Yale University. In the 1960’s, Mangold focused on the monochrome as his primary method of painting… Like Brice Marden and Robert Ryman, popular minimalists at the time, Mangold was also interested in the perceptual reception of the most elemental geometrical shapes: the circle, triangle and square by complex combination of color, line and shape. In the 1970’s Mangold began to explore the relationship between shape and line. He currently lives and works in Washingtonville, New York. In 1969 he won the Gugenheim Fellowship and has shown at the Whitney Biennial four times (1979, 1983, 1985, 2004).
