Sally Mann Biography

(b Lexington, VA, 1951) American Photographer. Sally Mann received her BA (1974) and MA (1975) from Hollins College. She uses an old fashioned 8x10 camera which yields photographs often characterized as errie and ghostly. Mann’s early series focused on images of her children. Conservative groups have targeted these works because her photographs often feature her children naked. Some people have referenced these images as child pornography, while Mann defends her work by stating that the photographs feature them as feral children, untouched by society. Southern landscapes are the subjects of Mann’s most recent series. Presently, she lives and works in Lexington, Virginia.
