Mantegna, Andrea: Der Triumph des Caesar

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Schule. Der Triumph des Caesar: Römische Senatoren; Die Elefanten; Römische Soldaten tragen die Trophäen. 3 Kupferstiche in Schwarzbraun gedruckt. Je ca. 28,3 x 26,5 cm. Um 1490. B. 11, 12, 14; TIB (Commentary). 017a, .018c, .019a. Selten. B. 12 aus den Sammlungen John Postle Heseltine (Lugt 1508) und Sir Thomas William Holburne (Lugt 2860), B. 14 aus der Sammlung Christian David Ginsburg (Lugt 1145).

Description: The Battle of the Sea Gods inscribed 'INVID/....' pen and brown ink heightened with white 271 x 405 mm. PROVENANCE A.-J. Dezallier d'Argenville (L. 2951), his associated number '152'. Dr. C.D. Ginsburg (L. 1145). NOTES The present sheet is a vigorous early copy after the left half of Mantegna's engraving of the Battle of the Sea Gods, exhibited at the Royal Academy, London and elsewhere, Andrea Mantegna, 1992, no. 79, illustrated. The differences between the drawing and the print are minimal: the background hatching in the former is more extensive in some areas, and the oval mirror among the bullrushes is unadorned. These differences are not sufficient to suggest that the draughtsman was working from a lost preparatory drawing, rather than the print.
