ANTONIN MERCIE: MONUMENTAL BRONZE OF GLORIA VICTIS 1875

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MARIUS-JEAN-ANTONIN MERCIE, 'GLORIA VICTIS', A MONUMENTAL PATINATED AND GILT FIGURAL BRONZE late 19th century, the plaster model executed 1874, cast in bronze by Barbedienne shortly after, signed 'A. MERCIE' on the base, titled and impressed 'F. BARBEDIENNE, Fondeur. Paris', on the circular plinth. Height 6 ft.(approx.) MARIUS-JEAN-ANTONIN MERCIE (French, 1845-1916) The offered bronze 'Gloria Victis' is recognized by most to be Jean-Antonin Mercie's best known sculpture. The work received great acclaim and won a medal of Honor when the plaster model was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1874. The plaster model for 'Gloria Victis" was purchased by the City of Paris. From it's presentation in 1874 through the present day, "Gloria Victis', has always been highly admired for it's aesthetic appeal and it's patriotic recognition of heroism in defeat.
