Lot 116: Aime Millet (French, 1819-1891)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: joseph-louis gay-lussac, a portrait bust Signed Aime Millet White marble 63.5 cm (25 in) Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac (1778-1850) was the most celebrated chemist and physicist of his age. At the turn of the nineteenth century he embarked on a course of researches into terrestrial magnetism, vapour and temperature which resulted in his law of volumes in 1808. Gay-Lussac's further scientific advances include his synthetic formation of hydriodic and iodic acids and isolation of cyanogen. His investigations on sulphuric acid, bleaching chlorides and the assaying of silver are also notable. Appointed professor of Chemistry at the Polytechnic School, Gay-Lussac's official appointments include superintendent of the government manufacture of gunpowder (1818), chief assayer at the mint (1829) and professor at the Jardin des Plantes (1832). The original of this imposing bust was commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior in 1850, was completed in 1852 when it was exhibited at the Salon (no. 4504), and subsequently displayed in the vestibule of the Grande Salle des Seances at the French Institute. It cost in the region of 2000 francs. A replica was ordered in 1860 for the Galeries Historiques at Versailles (MV 4964), see Musee National du Chateau de Versailles, Les Sculptures, 1 - Le Musee, Paris 1993, cat. no. 678, p. 161. A bronze version was also exhibited at the Salon in 1850 (no. 3525), while two plasters are in the Museum d'histoire naturelle, Paris. Aime Millet was born in Paris, and studied drawing with his father, a portrait miniaturist. He then worked for Viollet-le-duc and subsequently became a pupil of David d'Angers. He made his debut at the Salon of 1840 with a statue Jeune potre pleurant son chereau. However, his greatest success was probably his Ariane, shown in 1857 which earned him a gold medal. After that he received numerous commissions, many of them civic, including the group of Apollo which crowns the Paris Opera, a colossal figure of Vercingetorix for Alise-Sainte-Reine, the figure of Chateaubriand at St. Malo, and a large allegorical bronze figure of South America in conjunction with Edouard Houssin for the Palais de Trocadero in honour of the Exposition Universelle of 1878, now part of the Musee d'Orsay collection, see Cat. sommaire, p. 199, RF 3749. Further literature: Lami, vol. III, p. 451-3.
