FARHAD MOSHIRI
Farhad Moshiri Biography
(b 1963) One of the most talented of a new generation of Iranian artists, Farhad Moshiri follows in the footsteps of Jeff Koons and Mike Kelley in enlisting kitsch imagery as a form of visual satire of a world dominated by homogenizing mass-media and popular culture. Moshiri grew up in LA, studying fine art at CalArts where he experimented with installations, video art and painting before returning to Tehran in 1991. His time in California deeply impacted his art because he was constantly forced to compare “High Art” and “Hollywood-style commoditization”. Eventually he stopped seeing a distinction and decided that all art is essentially a packaging of ideas for public consumption. Some of Moshiri’s best known work includes his monumental jars and bowls series in which large scale ceramics are painted on canvas, their ancient crumbling texture covered in Persian calligraphy which at times references the lyrics of Iranian pop songs. Other works by Moshiri include photographs of consumerist goods, which play on Farsi and English words and meanings getting lost in translation.
