Condition Report: Canvas: Unlined Condition: Very Good Restoration: Very Minor Frame: Period Comments: This painting has overall crazing and extremely fine structural cracking, the majority of which is not visible with the naked eye. This condition is commensurate with age. The canvas is stable, with gesso corners, is in excellent condition and is tacked on its original stretcher. The work has been reviewed by a conservationist. Their recommendation is a cleaning and new varnish. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Description: German 1781-1841 design for the title page of italienischen marche, by clemens brentano signed and dated 1815 l.r. gouache and pen and ink, unframed 18 by 12 cm., 7 by 4 1/4 in. This gouache was the result of a competition between Brentano and the artist to see if the former could write a novel so complex that the latter would be unable to produce an illustraion for it. Schinkel won and the gouache was intended for the cover of the book, which was published by Guido Gorre, Cottaschen Verlag, Stuttgart and Tubingen 1846-47, though eventually without the illustration. The drawing is dedicated on a separate sheet to Dr V.C. Muller by Clemens Brentano and his brother. Provenance: Dr V.C. Muller, Frankfurt-am-Main, Clemens Brentano's doctor, a bequest, June 1844; Carl Morgenstern, inherited from the family of the above Exhibited: Bad Homburg, Freies Deutsches Hochstift Goethemuseum, Clemens Brentano, June-September 1970.
