Leroy Neimann Biography

Leroy Neiman is famous for his brilliantly colored paintings and screen prints of sporting events and athletes that are both representative and abstracted in ways that suggest motion and action. His works are often featured in sports magazines and at international events pertaining to sports. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota where and when, early in his life he was abandoned by his father. His mother, Lydia, reared him as both she and he were forced to fend for themselves. His ability to draw was recognized early. He left high school in 1942 to join the U.S. Army. Four years later he returned to finish his high school degree. He then studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (where, for a time, he taught), the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois. Early in the 1950s he became an illustrator for the department store of Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. Here he met Hugh Hefner who founded Playboy magazine in 1953. Newman’s art became featured in several issues. He continued to produce works for Playboy with monthly illustrations. Neiman works in oil, enamel, watercolor, pencil, pastels, silk screen, lithography and etching. Subjects beyond sports images include sailing, cuisine, celebrities, famous locations, America at play and portraits of big game experienced on safari. He and his wife, Janet, live in New York City at the Hotel des Artistes, overlooking central park. There he keeps his studio, offices, archives and penthouse on separate floors. His prints are eagerly collected and obtain impressive sums. At a Christies auction of December, 2003 a painting Neiman made in 1969 established a record for his work at $107,550.00. Neiman continues to paint with vigor.
